Henry F. Miller was a renowned piano craftsman from Rhode Island who worked at the piano manufacturer Brown & Allen in the 1850s. After honing his skills at the famed Emerson Piano Company until 1857, he opened his own piano workshop in 1863. As a classically trained pianist, Henry F. Miller was foremost interested in manufacturing instruments meant for pianists at the highest level. His first workshop was located in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Henry F. Miller quickly grew their reputation for their rich sound and fine craftsmanship.

Henry F. Miller's firm enjoyed instant success. In the 19th Century, Boston was home to a large population of old-world craftsmen who had immigrated to the United States. These craftsmen possessed amazing skills in woodworking and piano building, and Henry F. Miller was in a position to take full advantage of this skilled workforce.

Henry F. Miller, Sr. died in 1884 and the firm was taken over by his five sons, Henry F. Miller, Jr., Walker H. Miller, James C. Miller, Edwin C. Miller, and William T. Miller. The firm produced a full line of upright, square, and grand pianos. They also built a line of “Pedal Pianos” which were conventional pianos equipped with a full pedal board to aid in organ instruction and practice. By the turn of the century, the firm had discontinued square grand pianos and increased their upright and grand piano production. Player pianos were introduced shortly after as well. The firm also built pianos under the “Trowbridge” brand name.

In the 1920s, Henry F. Miller was a division of the Continental Piano Company, which was later bought by Winter & Co in 1945, moving the offices from its original New England home in Boston down to Memphis, Tennessee in 1951. Today, Henry F. Miller provides its piano design to some of the best piano manufacturers in Asia and supervises the production of its instruments by its own personnel.
