Tadao Kashio established Casio in 1946. Originally a small subcontractor factory that manufactured parts and gears for microscopes, Casio introduced the world’s first compact electric calculator in 1957, marking the beginning of the company’s transformation into the consumer electronics powerhouse it is today. Perhaps best known for its calculators and watches, Casio entered the musical instrument business with the launch of the Casiotone in 1980 and began producing digital pianos with 88 weighted keys in 1988.

Casio’s current line of weighted-key digital pianos consists of budget-friendly CDP-S models, the sleek and compact Privia line, and CELVIANO console pianos. 

The CDP-S line is the most affordable option for students, or anyone needing piano sound and feel in a small space. The CDP-S160 is the entry point, and the CDP-S360 adds hundreds of tones, rhythms, and multitrack recording. Privia models add more detailed sound, more nuanced key feel, additional connectivity options, and heightened style elements. With some models weighing under 24 pounds, some CDP-S and Privia models are the lightest and slimmest digital pianos available. 

Most CDP-S and Privia models ship with a basic sustain pedal, but can be made more pianistic with optional matching wooden stands and a portable three-pedal unit with half-pedaling. The PX-S7000 ships with its own mid-century modern-style stand with three pedals. 

CELVIANO pianos offer piano-like cabinetry in a variety of finishes, with sliding key covers and three pedals with half-pedaling. Several models include continuous pedal operation on both the damper and soft pedals. 

All Casio digital pianos use a weighted and scaled (graded) hammer action with ebony-and-ivory-feel keys. Privia models utilize “Smart Scaling” technology, which reproduces individual hammer behavior for each of the 88 keys. PX-S5000, PX-S6000, and PX-S7000 models also include Austrian Spruce in their key construction, as do CELVIANO AP-S450, AP-550, and AP-750 models. 

The flagship CELVIANO Grand Hybrid GP-310 and GP-510 feature full-length Spruce grand piano keys and a realistic hammer mechanism that recreates the pivot points of an acoustic grand. These models also feature recreations of three famous concert grands, dubbed “Hamburg”, “Berlin”, and “Vienna”. The “Berlin” is a C. Bechstein, which collaborated with Casio on the Grand Hybrids’ design.

With the exception of the CDP-S160 and Grand Hybrid models, all Casio digital pianos can utilize the tiny WU-BT10 Bluetooth Audio & MIDI adapter to send and receive MIDI and play audio through the piano’s built-in speakers. It is included with all Privia and non-hybrid CELVIANO models and is an optional add-on for the CDP-S360.
