Yamaha 1975 Model CF (9') Concert Grand Piano
Ebony Satin - Ivory Keys
Serial Number 1963700
Beginning in the late 1940's, right after the end of WW II, Yamaha Corporation began making, for the first time, hand-crafted Concert Grand pianos. The famous FC and CF models were highly praised from the outset and, if you recall, Glenn Gould purchased 2 Yamaha CF 9' Concert Grands explaining that these pianos were the only ones he had ever played that truly 'expressed his desires.'
This Yamaha 9' CF Concert Grand piano was the 1st U.S. delivered Yamaha CF Concert Grand. The others had remained primarily in Europe and Asia. It arrived in San Francisco in 1975 and was used extensively by artist and visiting groups at the famous Fillmore West. The piano is all original, has ivory keys and an incredible warm big sound. The instrument was used by the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Jerry Garcia Band, America, The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Oscar Peterson and Chick Corea,to name just a few-all for recording and touring. The Dead used it for some 16 years and most of their studio recordings from San Rafael, California, were made with this piano. The history of the instrument is documented. I purchased the piano in 2001 from the original owner who had leased it to the Filmore West where so many artists enjoyed its extrordinary qualities.
The piano continues to be maintained by Gerhard Feldmann and more recently Arlan Harris, both of whom are considered amongst the most respected piano technicians in America. As such, the instrument is tonally balanced, has exquisite touch and that remarkable deep bass. It also has the typical punch and attack sound so favored by Jazz artists. A really cool, soulful piano available at a modest price, especially for a concert grand.
