A rare find. This lightly-played, well-cared-for Charles Walter 1520 console piano and matching bench have been well cared for by a single owner. The Walters 1520 is applauded for its quintessential American sound, big, warm, deep, rich and full blooded Charles Walter pianos are renowned for their exceptional sound quality and performance grade playability. This Traditional Console model is also a beautiful instrument, hand-made with the finest hardwoods and finished in classic ebony satin.
We bought the piano when our kids started taking lessons. They’re grown. We’re downsizing, and it’s time to find this piano a new home. It was purchased new from Kurt Saphir Pianos in Wilmette, Illinois in 1999. It has been kept at home in a climate-controlled, humidified, and smoke free environment. The piano has been tuned 18 times since purchase, most recently in April 2013. It is equipped with the Langer direct-blow action, and has a matching bench with a storage well.
The asking price is $4,795. According to the Spring 2013 Acoustic and Digital Piano Buyer Guide, the retail value for a new Walter 1520 in the same style and finish would be $12,632 - $14,540. We are located in Highland Park, Illinois, and are happy to set up a viewing for serious buyers.
Charles Walters Pianos

The Charles Walter 1520 is an exceptional, hand-made instrument. It is considered among the finest pianos made. ThePianoReview.com places the 1520 in its highest ratings category – “Highest Quality Instruments. Pianos of utmost quality, built to the highest standards in the industry. Many of these piano manufacturers have a very limited production, and are hand crafted by Artisans. Truly the best of the best.”, and says that the Charles Walter is:
One of the finest hand-made pianos of our day. I would dare to call them the Steinway of the 21st Century. These pianos are built with the utmost attention to detail and maintain the supremacy of the American made pianos. Although [the 1520 Console] only stands 43.75 inches high [it] uses the same length strings as a 5'8'baby grand and has a better sound than most 52' upright pianos. The quality of materials is top notch and with the ever increasing Euro, the Charles R. Walter pianos are the best deal in a piano today!
Pianoguide.org also places Charles Walters pianos in its top ratings category – “Group A - World class, high performance pianos. These pianos are built and perform to the highest standards. Most are limited production, handmade pianos.”
The Acoustic and Digital Piano Buyer Guide includes the Charles Walter 1520 in its list of “Staff Picks”, noting that the model is a “Classic/Perennial Favorite” and a “Musical Standout.” The guide also describes the Charles Walter verticals as bearing “the mark of being designed by an engineer who understands pianos and strives for quality,” and rates Walter pianos as Performance Grade, “built to a single high standard.” Money Magazine has noted that The Walter 1520 consoles “are particularly prized for their warm sound.”
