Piano Evaluation Report: December 4th, 2013
Steinway model L grand piano serial number 395248
The present playing condition is only fair.
This piano was manufactured in the year 1966 at a time when Steinway was still using the problematic teflon bushings in the keyboard
mechanism which causes undue noise anytime the piano is played.
The parts making up the internal keyboard mechanism are worn and need to be replaced with new Steinway parts especially the hammers.
The key tops are made of plastic: they show signs of ware
(scratches) and dirt : to improve both appearance and touch, key tops should be replaced at this time.
The soundboard has been damaged by :
liquids having been spilled onto it,
poor climatic conditions ( low and high humidity) and
long storage periods lying on its side.
There are now many hairline cracks and pressure ridges on the board.
It would improve the piano’s sound a great deal by having a new soundboard installed.
The pin block is original : it is at an appropriate age for it to be replaced with a new block.
Both bridges are still in good condition and can be re-used.
The plate’s finish is old and tired and needs to be refinished.
The exterior of the piano has the original finish that is worn and damaged. The piano should be refinished to improve it appearance.
